Kathy's story

“There is nothing more emotional than seeing a child arrive in the unit. And there is nothing more rewarding than when they leave.”

Kathy Brennan is senior charge nurse in the Children’s Critical Care Centre and she has worked in the unit since it opened in 1993. As a mother as well as a nurse, Kathy says she would expect nothing but the very best from the unit.

“We were ecstatic to open the new state of the art Children’s Critical Care Centre in May 2009. The new Centre brings together the excellent team work and clinical skills of the staff in harmony with the highest quality facilities.

Our fundraising, which was so well supported by the local community and indeed the staff here at King’s, has been central to fulfilling that excellence in care. We have been able to ensure our Centre has been fitted with essential equipment required by children who need it. Critically ill children are dependant on advanced technological support and we are now in a position to provide that comprehensively.

Coming into hospital is in its very nature a difficult and worrying time for sick children and their families. This is why we wanted patients and staff to have a say in how they wanted the new centre to look and feel. The end result is fantastic, and creates a friendly and stress-free environment for the children who are treated here as well as the staff working in the Centre.

Working here is a privilege. I have been at King’s for over 20 years and am so proud of the services we provide. Nothing can compare to knowing we have gone that extra mile for our patients, families and staff.”
