The Roald Dahl Foundation helps establish a new service for children with acquired brain injury

The Roald Dahl Foundation has pledged £52,816 to fund a part time Occupational Therapist for two years to help establish a new service in the Variety Children’s Hospital at King’s for children with acquired brain injury.

As a specialist centre, King’s provides emergency intensive care and neurosurgical care 365 days a year to children from all over the UK who have suffered brain injury. Many of these children go on to need intensive rehabilitation.

This funding means children will be able to receive dedicated neuro-rehabilitation from the outset, offered in a structured and integrated manner by a multidisciplinary team. It is well recognized that the early application of appropriate stimulation and therapy can enable the child to reach levels of recovery that they would otherwise not achieve. Such therapy can also avoid the development of permanent deformity or disability which can be very difficult to overcome in the long term. This integrated early rehabilitation approach will improve the outcome of those children attending the service and hopefully shorten their length of stay in hospital, thereby both improving the quality of their experience and enabling a greater number of children to benefit from the service.

The Roald Dahl Foundation is a charity supporting children with specific conditions such as acquired brain injury throughout the UK and is proud to be working in partnership with King’s to provide this important new service
